UK Visa Sponsorship

I Paid £17,950 for Sponsorship — Here's What Nobody Told Me

Amara in her car

I still remember the day I sent that money.

I was in my room. Phone in my hand. My heart was beating, but I still pressed send. £17,950. Just like that.

I am not writing this so you will pity me. I am writing it because I don't want you to do the same thing just because you are scared.

How the Money Started to Sound Normal

The first time somebody told me £17,950, I nearly choked. I said, "Ah. For what?"

Then another person said, "That one is even cheap o. Some people pay twenty-five." Then another person said the same thing. Before you know it, the money started to sound normal. Like something you just have to pay if you want to stay in the UK.

That is how they get you. Nobody sits you down to ask, "Why are you paying this at all?" They just keep repeating the price until your brain accepts it.

A friend of a friend introduced me to the agent. You know that kind of introduction. "My guy is genuine." So I relaxed small. It was not a random person on Facebook. Somebody I knew was the one that brought him.

The man started explaining. Companies need money for the "risk and paperwork." This is how care work is. Everybody that wants sponsorship is paying. If I don't pay, I am the one doing hard thing for nothing.

And me? I was tired. I was scared of going back home to start explaining myself. So I paid. Small small. My family helped me. I added the little money I had saved from small jobs while I was in school.

I didn't even argue. I just wanted to stay.

What That £17,950 Actually Got Me

Let me tell you what the money bought.

A care job. A CoS. A way to remain in the UK.

That is it.

At the time, I was telling myself I was paying for peace of mind. For a shortcut. Looking back, I was just paying because I was scared, and the man knew it. He knew I would pay.

I am not saying every agent is bad. And it is not only agents, that is the part that annoyed me later. Some companies themselves will ask you for money under the table before they give you a CoS. They will not even call it an agent fee. They will just say, "Pay this one, we will sort you."

Some of them look correct. Fine website. Staff. Office. Still collecting money quietly.

The Thing Nobody Tells You

This one took me too long to understand.

You do not have to pay that kind of money for sponsorship. A real employer can sponsor you because they want you for the job, and because they already have the licence. That cost is their own business. It is not supposed to land on the person that is most desperate.

They will change the name, sha. "Processing fee." "Introduction." "Just between us." Abeg, don't let the name confuse you. If somebody is asking you for thousands before they will sponsor you, slow down.

These conversations don't happen in the Home Office. They happen on WhatsApp. On phone calls. Cash. "Don't tell anybody." That is why it keeps going. Everybody is quiet, so the next person thinks it is normal.

When the Whole Thing Scattered

About two years later, that same company lost their sponsor licence.

The £17,950 did not protect me. I was back to square one, looking for a new sponsor, and this time I was not paying that money again. I didn't even have it.

So I stopped looking for somebody to "sort me." I started looking for a company that could sponsor me without collecting money from me.

That is how I found VisaJobFinder.com. It was inside a WhatsApp group I was already in. One of those Naija UK groups. Job alerts, Home Office stress, everything mixed together. Somebody just dropped the link one evening. I nearly scrolled past it like every other message. I thank God I didn't.

A screenshot from one of my WhatsApp groups. This is the chat that changed everything for me.

It was not doing shakara. It didn't promise me a job. It just showed jobs from companies that already had an active CoS, and were actually hiring people that need sponsorship. Not those adverts that write "sponsorship available," and the moment you ask, they start forming.

I applied. I went for interviews. And in under 6 weeks, I had a new sponsorship job. Nobody asked me to pay for the CoS. The job itself was free. The thing I paid £17,950 for the first time, I got the second time without paying anybody for it.

Don't Pay for It. This Is What I Did Instead

I am not saying this as a theory. I paid the money. Then the company lost their licence, and all that money could not keep me safe. The second time, I got another sponsor in under 6 weeks, and I did not pay for the job.

That is the advice. If somebody is asking you to pay thousands before they will sponsor you, you do not have to do it. A real employer can sponsor you because they want you for the work, and because they already have the licence. You should not have to buy the CoS.

Look for companies that can actually sponsor, and that are hiring people who need it. That is what I used VisaJobFinder.com for. It was a total life changer.

I cannot promise you will get a job in 6 weeks. Every person's case is different. I can only tell you what happened to me after I stopped trying to pay my way in.
